“Give my people plenty of beer, good beer, and cheap beer,
and you will have no revolution among them.” – Queen Victoria
What better place for Queen Victoria’s people to imbibe
their brew than in that most quintessentially English institution – the pub.
The friendly publican, the cozy nooks, the comforting food and the regular
crowd is what comes to my mind when I picture a pub. What’s missing – oh, yes
your favourite tipple.
While most of us can relate to being a pub customer, fewer
know what it is like to be a pub server and fewer still know what it is like to
be a publican. Being on the serving side of the bar has changed over the years
and my family’s story has witnessed a lot of those changes.
